Fishing

Deep Sea Fishing is some of the best in Ireland, confirmed by the hosting of the European Federation of Sea-Anglers competition in 2001. Game fishing is available on Lough Currane and Derriana, with ghillies and boats for hire. There are some useful numbers below:

Skellig Isles Trips

The Skellig Isles rise from the sea some 12km to the west of Bolus Head. Boat trips operate from various locations, and run between April and October. Skellig Michael was first colonised by 6th century monks and many of their buildings have been well preserved. It's a must see archaeoligical attraction. Contacts for boat trips are listed below:

Hill Walking

The area offers excellent walking routes, for both the novice and experienced walker. The Floral Walk, suitable for all ages, is approximately 5km long and runs from Cahersiveen to Cuas Crom. The Kerry Way, which winds its way around the Iveragh Peninsula, is close by. The more enegetic should walk the circular Bentee Loop, 9km long, it climbs to the top of the Bentee Mountain offering magnificent views of the sea, Valentia Harbour, Cahersiveen and the surrounding area. Other walks include some local attractions such as Cahergall Fort, Kimego Wood, Ballycarberry Castle and Leacanabuaile & Cahergall Ring Forts.

Celtic Music Festival

This festival is held annually during the August bank holiday. The festival offers workshops in Irish music, musical entertainment, art exhibitions, dance and language, historical lectures, children's entertainment and walks.


Places to visit

Beaches - Cuas Crom Beach, an excellent beach for swimming. Other beaches can be found at Rossbeigh, Waterville and Caherdaniel.

Carhan House - Birthplace of Daniel O'Connell, "The Liberator", a 19th century politician who campaigned for Irish emancipation and championed the cause of the Irish in the British Parliament.

O' Connell Memorial Church - Situated in the centre of the town dedicated to Daniel O'Connell.

Valentia Meteorological Observatory - Open to the Public on Thursdays 11am to 12:30.

Ballycarbery Castle - a 15th Century tower House.

Leacanabuile amp; Cahergall Stone Forts - Impressive examples of dry stone masonry, circa 800/900 AD.

The Barracks(Cahersiveen Heritage Centre) - once an old RIC Barracks, burnt down in 1922 now restored to its former glory, as part of a Community project. The Barracks is an interpretive centre for the area.
